Do not limit creativity, while adhering to the organization's design principles

As a new addition to the design team, I learned that my role is crucial in infusing new ideas and perspectives, not just trying to fit into the team's ones. While it's important to understand and respect the existing design ethos of the team, it's equally important not to limit my creativity to merely adjusting or tweaking the current design. Instead, I strived to bring a fresh viewpoint and new ideas that could help push the boundaries of our design.

Consider accessibility in the early stages of the UX process, not the last stage

I attended a demonstration led by our accessibility partner, showcasing their call experience. I observed the challenges they faced, such as having to simultaneously listen to the call and the talkback to navigate the screen. This insightful experience changed my approach to designing the calling experience. Now, I am more mindful of accessibility considerations from the early exploration stage.

TAkeaways

Inclusive UX writing is important as well as creating accessibility annotations

I am an advocate for inclusive design. However, I learned that good intention alone was not enough. It was a wakeup call when the UX writer changed the feature's title to use more inclusive language. This enlightening experience inspired my master's degree thesis project, which focuses on helping designers create more inclusive and accessible digital products.

Workplace friendship blossomed my capabilities and supported my mental health

My manager and I had the same interests like dancing, K-pop, and food, which aided my workplace adaptation. Her friendly nature promoted my creativity and collaboration.

Google's Coffee Ninja program, which paired me with Googlers from various teams for weekly chats, helped me understand the company culture more quickly.

Finally, Google's mentorship program was key in managing my mental health. Paired with a senior designer in different team, our weekly meetings provided me with valuable guidance on project/team issues from a fresh, company-culture-based perspective.
